Place this in the laughable column. The much hyped Kenny Phillips, who in recent years has to be counted as one of the biggest disappointments at the University of Miami is declaring for the NFL Draft. In recent years even much less heralded UM safeties such as Mo Sikes, Al Blades and James Lewis have been much better players, much better leaders than Kenny Phillips.
Phillips Miami career peaked as a freshman when he made a game saving INT of Clemson equally over rated QB Charlie Whitehurst in Death Valley. Phillips is fast and effective on safety blitzes but has terrible instincts when compared to previous Miami greats like Ed Reed, Sean Taylor and Brandon Merriweather in pass coverage. I will argue Merriweather's presence the previous two seasons and that of Anthony Reddick and Greg Threat at times made Phillips look a whole lot better than he was.
My prediction: Mel Kiper has Phillips going in the 1st round, and after tearing up the scouting combines he becomes the latest in a short list of Miami first round draft busts joining the likes of Bill Hawkins, Yatil Green and William Joseph. That short list owes itself to the major impact others from the "U" have made in the NFL, but Phillips will probably be nothing more than a journeyman safety in the NFL.

Dude, chill out!
Ed Reed would look like shit too on this Miami team.
the dolphins should trade down and get him.....then they should look to free agency for d-line. There are many needs on this team...and safety is a big one. If we trade down to like 10-12th...we should be able to get several picks...and we could address many issues rather than taking Glenn Dorsey. I just cannot justify taking a DT with the first pick of the draft...when somebody like Albert Haynesworth will be a free agent.
Kartik, you are so full of shit and negativity towards this football team it's crazy!
Even when we were winning in 2004 and 2005 you were complaining on this blog about how bad Miami was and how USF was better. Well you got your wish! We don't need your types around supporting this team!
KP is BTW a Top 10 IMHO, and a LOCK for the Top 15.
You're smoking some good stuff if you think he is a top 10 pick. He isn't fast enough and isn't strong enough. Look at Sean Taylor way bigger, faster a better hitter and a better ball hawk the KP and he went 5th. Unless KP runs a 4.5 40 he isn't going any where near top 10. I think a 4.5 40 might get him to the bottom of round one. He needs to get bigger and just isn't fast enough to be a top 10 pick. A safety has less value in general and it takes a special one to go top 10. I think mid second round at the best. That is in itself being generous. Oh, and I do agree with Kartik. If it wasn't for the so-called "pro potential" phillips would have been reduced to the scrap heep of poor Miami recruiting busts by now. What a joke he has been since that Clemson game.
PS: I STAND CORRECTED. HE HAD THREE INTS LAST YEAR AGAINST DUKE. ANYONE WHO CAN DO THAT TO DUKE SHOULD BE A TOP 5 PICKS. FOUR OF HIS LAST FIVE CAREER INTS WERE AGAINST DUKE. LMFAO!
Keep in mind he also played with some pretty god corners until this year. Maxey, Jennings, Sharpe when he was healthy. I agree with you. KP is way way way over rated.
Canester you are wrong. He had 3 picks vs Duke last year, 1 pick vs GT and 1 this year versus FIU. So that's only 3 of 5 you punk!
At least Kenny will keep our first round streak alive!
if Reddick comes back the same player he was before and can stay healthy we'll be fine at Safety. KP made the right decision. He's ready for the NFL. He's not Sean Taylor but LaRon Landry isn't Sean Taylor and he was still the 6th pick in the draft. Landry is who I'd most compare KP since he's just SOLID in all facets of the game but not a huge playmaker as far as INTs go. Now if KP could run 4.37 like Landry ran he'd be a top 10 pick, too. I doubt that happens though. He'll still be a 1st Rounder.
Well rumor has it, that Butch has been a real prick while out on the recruiting scene trying to steal UM commits. Supposedly he has been bad mouthing the University, the facilities, and even coach Shannon saying he probably will be fired next year, which I have heard has been back firing on him with the kids that are in love with UM. It's one thing to recruit a kid and try to sell your school, its another to do with I have heard what Butch Davis is doing. What an a$$ bag.
FF40...what you just described is lying and misleading...thats not negative recruiting
negative recruiting is pointing out flaws in another program....Butch, if its true, is lying AND negative recruiting
look...hypothetically, lets say UM had a 9-3, 10-2 etc season...and FSU was 3-9 and FSU had a big time committ that randy felt he MUST have
do you honestly believe that FSU's losing record will NEVER be brought up by at least someone on the coaching staff?

Yeah, but I don't think what you are referring to is "Negative Recruiting".
If it is the truth, how can that be negative? If a coach says "UM was 5-7 last year and we were 9-3 so you can win here sooner". That's just stating you are more confident in your program. Your selling your program. That isn't negative.
However, it should be pointed out...
Randy (according to recruits) doesn't mention other programs.
Why is anyone surprised at Davis' act? EVERY YEAR he was the flavor of the month for the NFL. He straight lied to Joaquin's face in the morning and left that afternoon. Davis has always been a snake oil salesman. I was glad to see him go then and I was glad we didn't bring him back.
I wouldn't be so harsh on Kenny. He wasn't spectacular but he had a solid career. His measurables alone will get him in the first round, and he can probably be like a Roy Williams type safety (although Roy is extremely overrated).

your pretty stupid if you think that because none of the guys you mentioned were predicted to go in the first round. One died in a car crash and never had the chance to really play in the nfl. and the other two were late picks in the drafts. You are absolutley retarded
