Arthur Brown Chooses Miami

Linebacker Arthur Brown from Wichita, a 5 star recruit considered by many to be the best at his position in the nation has chosen Miami over LSU, USC, Alabama and North Carolina. This is a big recruiting get for Randy Shannon, but I am more dubious than most about 5 star recruits. Previous Miami coaches Larry Coker and Denis Erickson had below average results from 5 star signings while Erickson and particularly Jimmy Johnson did better with guys further and further down the recruiting board. I think it is also significant that between the two major fan websites more than 3,000 Hurricane fans were online to witness Brown's announcement which is often times more than the number that attend a midweek non-league game for the Hurricanes Basketball team, which unlike the Football team is actually ranked in national polls. Miami is forever a Football school and everything else when it comes down to is an after thought. That having been said, stay tuned to this site and our soon to debut sister radio program for the latest from Basketball and Baseball at the "U." (shameless plug I know, but I could not resist)

Attended the Miami NW game vs Boone, Those NW men can play the game of football, I say Men because their far from little highschool boys, there bigger, stronger, faster and smarter, i would recruit all the seniors from NW...
also spoke to Barrow who was at the game with 4 other U coaches, said;s, lb, Ramon Bucannon palm bay high is a solid commit, Hes my local !! Him and David Rowe Cocoa high Db!

While Boone high had their usual,It was alot of Canes fans from different cultures and races, there waving their U flags on the NW side it was beautiful, this is probably the most important recruiting class ever!!!

Patchan would be a solid close to this class.. If we snag Brown, Patchan, PJ and Harris with the rest of the group we have.. WOW!.. I won't hold my breath..Wait or we still on Julio Jone's short list? Oh now I'm dreaming again.

this coaching staff gets credit so far for putting togther a class like this even with a bad year(of course if they all stay with the U) but they get some credit now lets see if they can do something with the players un like coker did with good recruit classes so some credit but it is all for nothing if we dont develop them

Big props to Michael Barrow good job in landing Brown. Dude looks like he could be next one and he doesnt have all the character issues like Willie Williams.

Now we need to make sure we get BH, because PJ aint coming here kid is a Gator.

This is huge for Miami in many ways. Not only is he one of the top young players in the country but it clearly sends a message to all the kids out there that Miami's class is going to be a great one. Some fece walkers are sure to fall our way as a result. It also stops the rumors that all the other schools are feeding that we are loosing the top kids that were verbals before. This is a true sign of just how good Randy and his staff are at recruiting. Congrats to all the staff at the U for a great job.

I don't want to get too ecstatic, but I have a feeling this is only the beginning. A signing like this will only show people like Patrick Johnson that something special is abou to happen in coral Gables. Look out for those floodgates because they're about to start bursting open.

Canes Today, Canes Tomorrow, Canes Forever

Screw you! After reading this last post again I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
pissed off!

All this great news and you want to talk about Basketball a sport where we can hardly if ever compete in the ACC. Yet you try and force it down our throats! Miami will probably never win at North Carolina, Duke or Maryland in roundball!

If we in cane nation are patient with Shannon, things will certainly turn around. You gotta have better players....and the team needs to add a much more physical mentality. Most importantly, we need a warrior at the QB position to go to the ship. It will take a few years to get it back all the way.

"Brown’s younger brother Bryce will be of the most sought after players next season. He is a five-star running back prospect. There has been much talk that the younger Brown would attend the same school as big brother. I bet X would love that but they will have to earn Bryce’s signature just like they did with Arthur.

“I am not going thru my recruiting with the intentions to follow my brother,” said Bryce. “I will evaluate each school that I am interested in and follow the process that he went thru because I see how it has worked for him.”

I was just thinking. Coach was saying, Glen Cook and Romeo Davis might be back with medical redshirts. . How much fun would that be to see all these stud linebackers come in and watch cook and davis play..I threw up a little in my mouth.

A NEW ERA OF FOOTBALL BEGINS
DONT THINK I EVER YELLED LIKE THAT FOR ANYTHING......BOY ITS ON NOW........WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS! WE'RE GOING TO WIN ANOTHER TITLE SOON!

you know what would be really sneaky...if the patchans blocked UF's chance at brown...the in home was originally scheduled for wed and brown on thurs..patchans canceled and said they can only do it on thurs...meyer decided to cancel with brown and make the in home with patchan

that is a pretty wild conspiracy theory but it would be a great plan if the patchans planned on going to UM all along

Give randy time its a good process he's selling real team unity and shipping out these seniors and juniors who have lost their love of the game these prospects along with last years class are brothers once we get these talented qbs battling the best will come out of our team now i wanna see us beat the gators upset taking us back to greatness

Comparing Larry Coker to Dennis Erickson & Jimmy Johnson is like comparing an old Pontiac Bonneville to a Corvette and a Jag.

Randy Shannon is originally from the Jimmy Johnson lineage. He also served under Butch Davis, who was directly from the Jimmy J tree of successful assistants.

And we're seeing Shannon already instilling similar discipline tactics as Johnson and Davis (just ask Sam Shields and Ryan Hill who were benched for poor/lazy practice habits) and using his own no-nonsense recruiting -- starting with his own backyard of south Florida (see Miami Northwestern High Commits: Jacory Harris, Aldarius Johnson, Marcus Forston, Brandon Washington, Kendal Thompkins) -- to land upper echelon prep players.

How do you as "The" Blogger for Canes football (and basketball and baseball) to poo-poo this event of receiving the solid commitment from one of the top LBs in America?

Larry Coker won the Canes fifth football NC with Butch Davis' recruits. Coker's weaknesses as a Head Coach were recruiting, lack of player discipline, and poor talent development. And AD (at the time) Paul Dee was stupid enough to offer LC that high-paying contract.

If you noticed, under Coker, the offense got progressively worse (research the stats, which don't lie) with each of his years during his head coaching tenure in Miami. And poor Kyle Wright suffered from not having the right people in place to make him better.

Don't you think that Randy's learned from that? Don't you think that Randy's learned from those years under Jimmy Johnson as a player and assistant coach and under Butch Davis as an assistant coach?

He comes from good stock.

It's gonna take time to "undo" the regression that evolved as a result of Old Man Coker being in charge.

But I like where Shannon's been. I love his experience. And I especially love that he's applying what he's learned thus far... esp. in recruiting at the moment.

DCU 99 you are right about Paul Dee. His decision to give Coker and extension and Perry Clark also have limited the ability of the athletic department to compete for quality assistants and complete upgrades to the Baseball stadium in a timely fashion.

You seem to be a historian of our program like I am. Please look back at our recruiting in the 1980s and tell me where all the 5 star kids were going. For every Jesse Armstead, we got five Russell Maryland's who were below the radar kids who became the best at their position in the country.

I'm tired of our fan base becoming obsessed with 5 star kids who they've never seen play before. We need to return Miami to being Miami- 2 and 3 star HUNGRY kids ready to conquer the world.

Kartik, you defend Coker these days even though two years ago you were rightly calling him out even as we were beating the likes of Va Tech and Clemson on the road.

Sure I buy some of the talk you make of institutional advantages for state schools, but the great equalizer should be our mystique. However, it is not, and that is where Shannon comes in.

I think we cna all admit after this season that Shannon is a terrible gameday coach. As bad as it gets, but he has a gift to talk to kids openly honestly and like a father and that may replinish the cupboard here real quickly.
