Bubble Bursts

Miami put a fitting capstone on a disappointing season with what was easily the worst postseason performance by the school since joining the ACC. The Canes, who have generally played well in the ACC Tournament were completely dominated in the paint today against Virginia Tech which runs its record to 7-2 against UM since both schools joined the ACC in 2005. (Miami only lost once to the Hokies while both schools were in the Big East from 2000 to 2004)

Miami needed perhaps only one win to make the NCAA Tournament but the Canes turned in their worst performance of the last two seasons.

Miami's reliance on the three point shot and the unwillingness of Dwayne Collins to assert himself inside forced the Canes to pop shots from outside. Adrian Thomas got hot towards the end of the first half to cut the VT lead at halftime to four, which was midleading considering the Hokies dominance.

But in the second half, VT left little doubt as to their quality. At the same time Miami stumbled offensively, missed free throws and showed little sense of urgency. Frank Haith has seldom appeared so disgusted and yet helpless in his five years as Miami's Head Coach.

Miami now apparently heads for the NIT, and a potential high seed in that tournament. Given Miami's lack of Basketball pedigree, and poor performances in key situations this season, getting to the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden should be the minimum requirement for this team.
