Shannon Deserves Time

As I have said for a year now on this site it takes time to rebuild. The players Larry Coker left in the Miami program weren't just mediocre to bad by Miami standards: they are bad by any standard: 1-7 in our last 8 ACC games, 3-14 in our last 17 ACC games: that's Vanderbilt/Duke/Temple bad. Last year I picked Miami to finish 4-8 before the season: they finished 5-7 exceeding my expectation by one game. Those who follow the Miami program like I do and try and objectively analyze the situation and take sentiment out of the equation should know this program has been broken for sometime. Merely signing one recruiting class and inserting a game breaking QB like Robert Marve does not solve the problem. Miami's difficulties in Football are far beyond what most on the national scene who proclaim after every faint sign that "Miami is back" realize. Randy Shannon has been given a nearly impossible job: Fix a program whose soul has been ripped out, who has higher academic standards than the schools they compete against to get recruits and has a lesser budget than the schools they compete against. Oh and he must also pacify a delusional fan base.

Basically the players Larry Coker have left Shannon are losers with a losing mentality. I see that as I have attended just about every home game the last several years: the players expect things to go wrong- guys like Chavez Grant, Bruce Johnson, Leonard Hankerson, and even Jason Fox are so "Cokerized" they are used to blowing games to middle of the pack ACC teams (which North Carolina with 3rd stringer Sexton a QB so bad that he only completed 8 or 26 passes two years ago in front of us in the OB) it has become second nature to them. This includes a lack of discipline of the upperclassman: Under Larry Coker no consequences existed for poor play, or bad decisions. Miami's players weren't being policed properly or taught how to stick together as a team.

The program is currently filled with losers. Until Randy Shannon has three whole classes of his own (he has one right now) judging him and his staff is going to be unfair: like the judgment placed on Ron Zook at Florida who was not winning (but not losing as badly as Miami has under Shannon) with Spurrier's last three lazy recruiting classes. If we want to be as classless as the Gators, pile on Shannon now. If we want to be patient and realize this is a long term process restoring the pride of a national championship program which was turned into a bottom feeder in record time, then keep coming to Dolphin Stadium like me and support the Canes. Nothing is more fulfilling than seeing these kids grow up in front of us. In the mean time support Miami Basketball and Baseball, two programs whose players have a winning mentality and whose success in the ACC should make all Canes fans proud.

Shannon is starting to look like Zook. I mean I dont know how he gets no heat when Miami is 7-9 under him. You mention Miami is 1-7 in its last 8 ACC games and 7-14 in its last 21 overall, yet you say the players are to blame for not listening to the coaches? Man that is lame. Your opinions about UM football have been on the mark ever since I started coming here, but this comment about Shannon not being to blame but the players are somehow mentally weak and losers is pathetic. Why are they mentally weak? He's had these players now for almost two years. Saban changed Bama's mentality, heck George O'Leary even changed UCF's mentality. Shannon himself was part of Coker's staff. How come he gets no blame for Coker's shortcomings? He was basically the #2 guy for pete's sake!

So we should give Shannon five years of losing seven out of every eight games to ACC opponents?

I echo the first comment. WTF?

The staff are the ones responsible for blowing this game; it has nothing to do with vague platitudes about the team needing to learn to win close games. It has to do with an unimaginative, overly conservative offensive philosophy that handcuffs our promising quarterback and fails to take advantage of - or show confidence in - the team's playmakers. Enough with the 4- and 5- yard passes. It's time to start throwing the ball down the field. And enough with the predictable shotgun draws on third-and-long. Nix is killing this offense.

It has to do with blitzing every down when playing some sort of zone coverage would suffice. It has to do with leaving your corners, the weakest starters on the team alone on an island against three of best pass catchers in the ACC.

It comes down to a head coach who has proven time and time again he cannot manage games. It comes down to apologists like you, kartik who keep saying "give him time."

You constantly on the show and on this site complain about Miami's losing mentality and blame our lack of talent. Perhaps you are abetting the losing mentality by consistently making excuses about the situation. You talk about how bad we are and how Florida State has so much more talent than us but yet make excuses every time we lose, saying it's down to the players. Heck you said Florida embarrassed us which they did not but then complimented Nix for his ultra conservative play calling. We are all in this together and we all tolerate constant loses to teams with inferior talent!

D. Van Dyke, Bruce Johnson and Chavez Grant just aren't very good.

Is it just me or is Grant slower then Chris Rutledge going to the sidelines? I mean these guys couldn't cover me one on one and I'm a girl. The team is good our secondary will continue to hinder us all season. Van Dyke cant cover anyone and Johnson cant tackle.

All three are terrible. They are our downfall. So essentially I agree with this piece. Shannon needs time to recruit DBs.

My biggest beef with Shannon is that he always throws players or a group of players under the bus. He never says " we got out coached or we made a mistake."

He's not accountable at all. It's Farqueson's fault just like last year it was Freeman's fault or Wright's fault. His post game comments after Kirby's 1 for 14 were telling, saying "he didn't listen to the coaches."

I guess nobody listens to the coaches at Miami. That's why we need NEW COACHES.

The worst post of your blogging career. You are now officially in a funk like the Canes.

1-7 in our last 8 ACC games?

How many of those games did Coker coach in?

Stop blaming the Choker for all of the problems of Shannon.

Even though Coker had "lost" the team in 2006 after Pata's death and all the close losses we won that Thanksgiving game late against BC to get into a bowl.

Under Shannon we lose that game.

He is over his head as a coach and needs to be fired at year's end.

While I totally agree talent is an issue, giving Shannon a repeated pass is not acceptable either. At some point he must be accountable for the failures of this team. At some point he must man up and say "my bad" to keep his team's confidence up. But he won't and that's the sign of a poor leader.

He's gotten time. Last year was our worst season since 1977. That's enough evidence for me: turn it around or be fired this season.

TRUE THE SECONDARY IS A PROBLEM BUT IN THE FRIST HALF WHEN YOUR MOVING THE BALL I DISAGREE WITH PULLING OUT MARVE AND COOPER. THE OFFENSE WAS MOVING THE BALL AND WE NEED TO STICK WITH WHAT WAS WORKING. I KNOW HE WANTS TO GIVE JACORY SOME WORK BUT DON'T DO IT WHEN THE OFFENSE IS ON A ROLL. IT THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED IN THE FLA. GAME. WE LET CAROLINA GET RIGHT BACK IN IT. AND CAN WE PLEASE FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN KICK OFF PAST THE TEN YARD LINE. FIELD POSITION KILL US AND THEY SCORED ON A SHORT FIELD EVERY TIME.

The Hurricanes had won 111 straight at home when leading by at least 10 points in the final quarter, according to university records and research by The Associated Press.

That streak ended Saturday, when North Carolina scored 14 in the final nine minutes and pulled off a 28-24 win."
