Spring Game: No Solution in the Passing Game

The annual Canes Fest today at Lockhart Stadium was a tremendous comedown after watching Miami's Basketball team, the past few months fight and scrape through the ACC and almost into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Once again I left a Miami Football related event with a real sense of impending doom for the program. We'll start with the few positives:

  • Javarris James looked quick and decisive again in the running game. He's still got the size and has regained the speed to hit the hole he had as a freshman
  • Graig Cooper. He's bigger and still as quick.
  • The secondary was quite good but that maybe more to the poor competition than anything.
  • Arthur Brown is going to be a stud. We knew that already but today confirmed it.
  • Marcus Fortson. He was all over the place in the backfield, harassing the QBs and runner
Now the bad

  • I thought all three Miami QBs looked like Freshman, which they are but get ready for a long year. Robert Marve should have done more with all the time he had to throw
  • The WRs are terrible. Just awful. Khalil Jones had three drops and the rest of WRs were unimpressive even the much touted Aladrius Johnson.
  • Still no solution at TE
  • Jake Wieclaw has a strong leg but got a kicked blocked
  • Anthony Reddick's two ACL injuries have effectively ended his effectiveness.
  • Derron Thomas suffered a nasty injury I am not sure he'll be back for a while
In other words, Miami like much of last year can run the football and not do much else consistently. But if Baby J really is back and Coop stays healthy, I can see the Hurricanes being a little better than I initially thought because they may be able to control the clock by grinding it out on offense. But the bottom line is that despite all the young talent, this team is in a full fledged rebuilding mode and getting to 5-7 again this year will likely be an accomplishment.

We're going to win a bunch of games we lost last year because of Wright and Freeman. So unless the rest of the team is much worse, 7-5 or 8-4 is where we will finish.

So you admit Fortson and Brown are studs! When was the last time Miami got those kinds of players in Basketball!

Football on this site.

My eyes are they playing tricks on me?

I thought this was a Basketball only site run by an alias for Coach Haith and Donna S. a Football hating and Basketball loving President.

I think Shawnbrey McNeal looked slow and indecisive today. Not what we expected.

By the way the Herald says Thomas was walking around fine after the scrimmage so the injury isn't as bad as you feared.

Lance Leggett is gone!

How bad could our receivers be?

Just about eveyrone I spoke to watched a different srimmage than you, except for the WR play. It's obvious you don't know jack about football, or are a Gator fan. Dumb.

Funny how last year we got some of the same angry posts when we said Miami would finish below .500 and be one of the worst teams in the ACC.

Miami finished below .500 and was one of the worst teams in the ACC at 2-6.

Then this year when ee said Miami could make the NCAAs we Basketball I got posts saying I was a homer and knew nothing. Miami made the NCAAs.

I hope I'm wrong but the truth is to the above comment, Miami's fans are the ones who don't know anything about Football when compared with other college football fans (except Gator fans who know less about football and basketball than everyone). Talking in an objective manner with most Canes fans isn't permitted. People get emotional and say we don't know what we're talking about.

Go back in the archives and look at what we said about Miami each of the last three football seasons and then look at what happened. We're not right about everything but we do know the Canes and the landscape of college football nationally. Miami isn't winning anything in Football anytime soon. Baseball and Basketball, well that is a different matter.

I thought Kartik was being crazy when I read his pre season preview last year and actually stopped reading the site. As the season wore on I realized his cynicism was spot on and came back and have enjoyed the insight even if 90% of the site is dedicated to Basketball. :)!
