T E B O W ! And other Random Thoughts

I apologize for the earlier use of the term "Yankees" to describe Miami's fans. It was a poor choice of words for the thought I was trying to convey, which was that despite the diversity of South Florida, the fans at the Orange Bowl are disproportionately from the Northeast and turn the normall atmosphere of Saturday College Football across the nation into the equivelent of a Sunday Afternoon at Giants Stadium. I apologize for whatever pain my insensitive comment may have caused.

  • If you don't think Tim Tebow is one of the most exciting players in College Football you need to have your head examined.
  • Nice to see Chris Leak tuck the ball under and take off to set up Florida's first touchdown at a time when the Gators needed a big play.
  • When was the last time Va Tech's defense was shredded like it was today by Georgia Tech, in Blacksburg? (I'm thinking Larry Fitzgerald and Pitt a few years ago.)
  • How bad a coach is John L. Smith? Just ask Ron Zook!
  • As most of our readers know last season even when Miami was stomping on respectable competition like Colorado and South Florida I called the team out for having no playmakers and predicted the bottom would fall out for them. (Of course I predicted it would be in Blacksburg vs Va Tech, when it actually happened a few weeks later.) I am here to tell you tonight that Miami is still very very shaky (thanks to some awful quarterback play) but they have found the future in Javarris James. James is probably the most exciting true freshman Running Back anywhere. (Emmanuel Moody at Southern Cal comes close)
  • Kyle Wright is awful. Miami fans should not make anymore excuses for someone who was higher rated by Scout.com and Rivals.com then Reggie Bush. With all night to throw the ball and an awesome running game, Wright still did his best to give the game away. Both he and Greg Olsen need to be bought a one way ticket out of Coral Gables on the next train out of town.
  • My wife attended her first College Football game with me tonight. Her impression was that the crowd would of mixed ethnicity since it was Miami and that the neighborhood would be filled with Cubans. (Even though I have told her countless times that the vast majority of Cubans left Little Havana years ago and now the area is inhabited by immigrants from other Latin American nations). Much to my wife's shock she found the crowd at the Orange Bowl to be "a bunch of drunk yuppies and rich kids." Yuppie isn't the correct term. It's New York sports fan, and every Saturday the Orange Bowl is littered with them. No wonder the crowds in Gainesville and Tallahassee are more respectful and civil. I imagine the crowd at a Miami Football game resmebles a Giants game when the fans decide to pelt snowballs at the opposition.
  • Virginia showed some signs of life today versus Duke. Now that NC State and Miami have awoke also, that leaves John Bunting's North Carolina team as the clear cellar dweller in the ACC.

Leggett had time to do the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle before Kyle's flutter ball finally landed in Leggett's arms in the first quarter .

I do not care for J James. I could see the newspaper headline........COKER FIRED!....knowing we were a mere hour or two away from the event we in the Canes Nation must have in order to move forward and this freshmen ruins it! Now we'll here about how Coker found this kid, and how he deserves to coach him for the next 4 years........PLEASE GET US OFF THIS RIDE NOW!

We are pathetic. Our D-line sucks. Our QB is the worst in our history. Our TE drops everything thrown to him. We have one bright stop, Javarris James!, but we are wasting this special talent on a team of losers. He should have been redshirted, but Coker fighting for his job has elected to start a true freshmen not for the best of the long term future of the team but to save his own skin. What a terrible time to be Cane.

You can call them "Yankees" or whatever else you want but the bottom line is... Those Yankees put all of South Florida on the map, are the reason Miami is rebuilt after every hurricane comes through, and are the sole reason the UM is what it is.

There is no way you can tell me that a bunch of southerners were going to go to a private college deep in the South Florida bushes when they could simply stay at home in Alabama, Georgia, or Mississippi.

Miami like Notre Dame attracted the well-to-do and others possibly not-so-academic individuals for decades.

Kartik, arent you a "Yankee" too?

Dear Matt,
Firstly, I dont use the "N" word.

However, there isnt a street from A1A to Tamiami Trail or North to 595 that you cant find some non-white person walking and wearing a UM hat, shirt, shorts, or socks.

I think Kartik's wife should join us in Gainesville and therefore have something to compare the OB with.

I am a Yankee and if it werent for my Yankee parents and their Yankee parents, I would not have had to come down to that crap-ass blue hair, early-bird eating, arroz con pollo dump!

If Miami is so "Yankee," why are all the street signs in both English and Spanish?

If its all "Yankee," then why does every one of UM's cheerleaders look like she just walked out of the Telemundo studios?

How about Henry Flagler and his Yankee ass bringing the railrod down here for all you ungreatful bastards?!

And its NEW fucking JERSEY just for the record!

Tebow is all hype. Just wait for LSU to smack him around!

Kartik,

As someone from the Northeast, I resent what you said and I call for an immediate retraction.

Don't lump them all together. I've been to Giants Stadium for football games, and there are only a select few that are assholes.

At the same time, a couple years ago when Miami went to BC I went to that game and I had an idiot sitting behind me throwing peanuts and peanut shells at me because I was rooting for Miami. That could've been that I had a co-workers tickets and he's a BC Alum who has season tickets and sits around other Alums.

Don't say it about everyone because it's not true.

As far as your other comments, I agree -- Kyle Wright needs to be thrown out of Coral Gables. He hasn't lived up to the hype and was throwing the ball horribly against Houston. Kirby Freeman desrerves a shot.

Greg Olsen needs to stay, because it's not his fault he's not producing -- it's Wright's. If KW can get him the ball properly, he can make the play. If he's throwing it 10 feet over his head 90 percent of the time, things aren't going to happen.

Why does Kartik owe the North an apology? He is just stating the obvious about New York snobs that root for Miami and Duke in Basketball.

He does owe the North an apology, because not EVERYONE is like that. The only problem is that those are the only fans that you hear about -- the assholes.

In all fairness, this IS Kartik's blog and I trully dont believe he needs to apologize for anything he writes... Its the entire point of a blog, to express opinions and in this case, collect reactions.

I am sure each and everyone of us can tell a story about bad fans, or some "asshole" at a specific game.

The bottomoine is this; Fans are passionate! Some mix their passion with beer, and in the case of the OB, beer was/is still sold. (I was last there when they ran out of water and ice a number of seasons ago against FSU) When you mix passion and beer/liquor/wine you get a person called "asshole" if and only if that person roots for the opposition. Otherwise you get something called "moron." You dont want to call a feelow fan (roots for same team) an asshole if you dont have to.

Unlike FSU and especially unlike UF, UM does NOT have a traveling fan base. Game in and game out, there are more UF alum fans on the "Blue" side of the field than there are total fans at a UM game (with few rare exceptions.)

Yankee or no yankee, of the population of Dade, Broward, Palm Beach counties, there has got to be a greater than 75% linkage of residents with the states of NY, NJ, MA, PA, and CN.

Its not worth researching however everyone knows that Miami (several parts like NMB) are all Yankee transplants.

At the end of the day, there are far fewer mature adults at the OB than at a stadium like UF. Most "kids" of college age act a whole lot better when there are older adults around watching.

Hey Kartik -

Don't forget you married a Yankee. Unfortunately, everything you said is true.

As big of a sports fan as you are how in the world can this be your wife's first college football game?

Where did she go to school?

I apologize for what I said using the term "yankee." However fans from the Northeast tend to act more unruly at sporting events then others. Take the fact that Mike Schmidt was booed for years in Philly even though he was having a Hall of Fame career. The same goes for fans in Boston and New York. Fans in the south are much more respectful and civil. Alabama and Auburn fans are among the classiest around. Jim Rome stated that Miami fans don't travel. By and large that's true, but the ones that do travel have a bad reputation and leave a wake of trash talking and bad behavior. That's because they behave like New York sports fans. The flying of banners over the Orange Bowl last night attacking OUR TEAM, was for me an indication of the sort of fans Miami has.

I do apologize for the team Yankee as it was misplaced and borne more out of emotion than anything. I have changed it to "New York Sports fan"

Let me also point out that the sale of beer (cheap beer designed to get people drunk) at the Orange Bowl is a big part of the problem. The fans behave like they do at a pro sports event, and college kids and beer is a bad combination at a football game. It must be the beer talking when the fans cheer Kyle Wright and tell me how crazy I am that I want to see Freeman play.

ESPN College Game Day will be at the SWAMP next Saturday.

Percy Harvin will play Princess D. Wynn most likely wont.

Do you think UVa beats the Canes?

I agree with you 100%. I watch and rewatch the games and QB play is killing us. Have you ever seen Kyle escape the pocket and then look down the field for open receivers, NO! Thats just the tip of the ice berg i'm not saying Kirby's better but nothing but good can come out of getting kirby some real playing time.

Listen to Canes Rising Radio!
