Well the hammer came down from the John Swofford and the league office. Miami is officially screwed next week versus Duke. Carlos Armour, Chris Barney, James Bryant, Tyrone Byrd, DajLeon Farr, Ryan Hill, Bruce Johnson, Charlie Jones, Brandon Meriweather, Brian Monroe, Derrick Morse, Randy Phillips and Anthony Reddick are the suspended UM players. Twelve of the above named players are starters or key role players. Miami's secondary will be seriously depleted as six defensive backs are on the list. The only two defensive backs in the dime package not suspended were Kenny Phillips and Glen Sharpe.
Twenty Florida International University players were suspended by the Sun Belt conference. In my humble opinion that wasn't enough. F.I.U.'s fans and players came into the Orange Bowl last night spoiling for a fight and they certainly caused enough trouble for the cross town Canes to last a lifetime. Many F.I.U. players grew up UM fans and are still bitter that they didn't get an offer to play at UM. Many F.I.U. students are upset they didn't get accepted to UM, and the FIU administration led by President Modesto (Mitch) A. Maidique is bitter that they are in the same town as UM. I am told that when President Maidique stumbles across a student wearing UM merchandise on the FIU campus he raises holy heck.
Miami never should of played F.I.U. given what I have described above. This ugly incident was bound to happen and no doubt exists in my mind, especially given the number of personal foul penalties and late hits by FIU prior to the fight that this behavior was in some ways pre-meditated. (and also given the ugly history of matches between Florida A&M and Florida State in athletics, games where the FAMU players have also gone out of their way to create trouble) My feeling is the NCAA and Sun Belt conference should end FIU's season right now, and Miami should never play them again. In addition, FIU should be placed on at least two years NCAA probabtion and the NCAA should also consider dropping the program to IAA. As for Miami, serious consequences should also be taken, but UM unlike FIU has proven they can police their own, so I won't make specific suggestions for them. I trust Donna Shalala will take care of this and restore Miami's honor.

Coker should be fired today. He is responsible for losing control over his team.
Who cares who started it? Miami should, but doesn't, have enough class to not become involved in an on the field fight. Miami has always been notorious for talking smack and now we're gonna blame this fight on FIU? Hypocrosy at work. It's OK for Hurricanes to talk trash but nobody else? I say, fire Coker and get rid of all of the players that participated. If a message is to be sent, that's the way to do it. Forget suspensions, terminate them and thier scholarships.
Bruce Feldman is reporting on ESPN.com that Coker is getting tired of his players and their antics and he might quit himself, so all the talk of him being fired will be moot.
THE MIAMI PROGRAM SHOULD BE GIVEN THE DEATH PENALTY FOR THIS. CRIMINALS AND OUTLAWS NEED NOT BE PLAYING FOOTBALL.
Just as an FYI, Chavez Grant is now the nickel corner- both Bruce Johnson and Randy Phillips have, in various games, been in the doghouse.
Perhaps Paul Dee and Larry Coker planned this little stunt with the help of the team. It was to save Coker the embarassment of being fired. Now he can just quit and save his image, sort of. Donna Sha Naa Naa can now hire her beloved Barry Alvarez.
What a joke. I agree with a previous commenter- Miami should be given the death penalty, or should have the guts to end the season right now. This roster has not earned the right to play another game this year. Classless.
Why wasn't UF fined or their season ended when they started a pre game fight with FSU and Doug Johnson threw a missle right at Bowden trying to kill him! If Reddick used the helmet as a weapon so did D. Johnson using the football.
Cane Fanatic, the answer to your question is because UF is UF...Period Point blank!
And if all you saw was Doug Johnson, obviously you were watching through rose colored glasses. It wasnt FSU that started it, Oh NO NO NO! It couldnt have been. It always has to be UF because your jealousy is manifested in such a skewed way.
And please... I dont know nor do I care why you are jealous or hateful... save us the boredom of seeing your elaborate BS post why you dislike UF.
Its about time that Metro Zoo closed it doors. Jack Hannah is needed to control the UM program not Donna shalala... besides who listens to that dumb woman anyways?
Miami's thuggery is disgraceful, but if I were a Gator I would not talk.
A few weeks ago we saw a full rap sheet of Gator criminal activity in the past few years. It was longer than the rap sheet of Miami + FSU COMBINED!
Yes much of it had to do with Ron Zook being an outlaw and a classless thug himself but the guys he recruited are the guys you are winning with now.
And Gator Gator, fighting should lead to a program being shut down, but attempted murder is okay? Reread your comments. That is basically what you are saying!
Cane Fanatic,
Perhaps you didn't watch many games when Doug Johnson was the quarterback. Our season ended when he took the first snap of the ball during his first game.
God Bless
It doesn't matter who started it, you gotta be man enough to walk away. For those of you who follow the teachings of The Holy Bible:
(Luk 6:29): If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also.
I failed to see that in any of the altercation last night. Yet, most of them claim to be Christian? Have any of them received penance?
I'm not here to Bible thump. I'm not even Christian. I'm here to show the unfortunate mess in this entire situation. If FIU was causing trouble the entire night, you know what, point to the scoreboard. Show FIU that why they were there wasn't working.
If the kids at FIU are upset that they didn't get to play at Miami, and deserved to be at Miami, then they should've beaten Miami. The fact that they lost, and got shut out, meant that the coaches were right, the players at FIU don't deserve to play in Miami.
And after this game, they don't deserve to play at UM every again, even as visitors.
Truth be told Miami was out of line in the brawl. You don't swing your helmet at another person and you don't stomp on somebody who is on the ground. But what you should do is defend your field goal holder. FIU picked the smallest person on the field to tackle and then kick in the head. Period point blank Miami should have backed him up but not to the extreme that they did.
I'm pissed off Doug Johnson was such a abd QB he didn't have the accuracy to hit Bowden.
What a shame he missed!!!
But as always, Dougie missed the target.
I volunteer for the patriotic mission.
Me and my niggah Canes homies will join you gayturs on the mission.
Don't forget about me homies!!!!!!!!
NOBODY gets in moooh trouble dan mes!
i gots a right to fire my guns even if they have dem cereal numbas rubbed off. Jus cuz they stolen does not mean I cants shoot at people in da butt.
BTW some people, myself included, choose FIU over UM because they have better programs in certain areas. Yes, FIU ball players would probably rather be at UM but some could certainly play AND START there. Take Bouie and Barnes on D (which held them to 14 points through the 3rd quarter until they lost half their starters from the nonsense). Bouie and Barnes were both on the Lombardi watch list (2 of 43), any UM players? NO
