Under Siege

The ESPN Hype Machine is doing its best to finish the Miami Program off.

It has been a bad year for the University of Miami Athletic Department. The Football program is under performing and in shambles, the Basketball team failed to meet expectations and the Baseball team was on probabtion. (though the reached the College World Series.) Things however got much worse for the Miami Athletic Department on Saturday Night as the now infamous melee with cross town commuter school Florida International took place on the field of the venerable Orange Bowl.

Florida International's fans and players came into the Orange Bowl Saturday night spoiling for a fight and they certainly caused enough trouble for the cross town Canes to last a lifetime. Many F.I.U. players grew up UM fans and are still bitter that they didn't get an offer to play at UM. Many F.I.U. students are upset they didn't get accepted to UM, and the FIU administration led by President Modesto (Mitch) A. Maidique is bitter that they are in the same town as UM. I am told that when President Maidique stumbles across a student wearing UM merchandise on the West Miami Dade FIU commuter campus, he raises holy heck. Miami never should have played a school full of envious, bitter elements, but alas the damage has now been done.

No question exists that Miami's players acted in a fashion that brings great embarrassment to the University, its alumni and to its fans. In addition, I agree with the media critics who state that while Florida International was clearly the aggressor, Miami bears much of the responsibility because their players did not have the maturity to simply walk away when provoked.

Miami should punish all players involved and revoke the scholarships of Anthony Reddick, and all-American Brandon Merriweather the two most flagrantly misfits the other night. However, Miami should not be subject to any of the inane suggestions and over hype that have floated on the ESPN family of networks in the past few days.

Joe Thiesman who feels his time at Notre Dame gives himself license to act holier than now dubbed Miami, Thug U, even though Miami has had far fewer off the field player incidents over the past five years than his beloved Irish. Thiesman himself played for a Notre Dame team that was involved in a bench clearing brawl with Southern Cal in 1971.

Lou Holtz has been condemning the Miami program for its lack of control. Yet in Holtz's last game as a College coach his South Carolina players not only cleared the bench to attack Clemson, but also were seen hitting police officers and fans. Let us not forget that Holtz himself put a choke hold on an official in a game with BYU in the mid 1990s while coaching that pristine institution, Notre Dame. While Hotlz has expressed regret for what happened at South Carolina he hasn't taken responsibility the way he professes Larry Coker should.

Kirk Herbstreit called the incident disgraceful and said Miami should consider firing Larry Coker for having a lack of control of his players. I am sure Jim Tressel had no idea that Maurice Clarett was a thug who was not attending class. Tressel and the Buckeyes were too busy preparing to play Miami in the Fiesta Bowl! The media now glorifies Troy Smith, but had he gone to Miami or Florida State we would still be hearing what a bad kid he is.

Sean Salsbury indicated that Miami should be subject to the death penalty and banned from all football competition. Salsbury, a graduate of Southern Cal surely needs some other school to be the subject of an NCAA investigation because as we all know, but ESPN has conveniently forgotten during Football season, Southern Cal is in a world of trouble for every sort of alleged violation possible. Lest us not forget the behavior of some Southern Cal players who coach Pete Carroll has never suspended.

Most laughable is Skip Bayless, a graduate of the University of Tennessee. Bayless called for Miami to receive the death penalty because of lack of player control. Obviously Philip Fulmer and the Tennessee staff that had SIXTEEN players arrested during the 2005 offseason is the model of strong institutional control. Miami has had one player arrested in the past 5 years (Antrel Rolle, who was quickly cleared of any wrongdoing) and must accelerate the recruitment of thugs at an astronomical rate to come anywhere close to catching Tennessee.

ESPN has ruined College Football in so many ways. Whether it is over hyping of certain matchups and teams or totally destroying the proud legacy of ABC Sports, which for years was the flagship network of College Football, ESPN has been at the forefront of destroying objective thoughtful coverage of the game. For whatever reason, ESPN has had a chip on its shoulder with regards to the Miami program for a few years now. When ESPN's commentators have useful suggestions about how to make College Football a better game we should listen, but when the excercise selective memory and lack objectivity we should turn them off.

Screw the ACC & Swofford!

This guy has the nerve to say this type of behavior has no place in CFB, but said nothing when Bobby allowed his players "AJ & Ernie" to play UM last year?

I guess beating woman & resisting arrest has a place in CFB Mr. Swofford? My question is: If UM ws handling this thing the proper way then why did Swofford have to get involved at all? & how come his sorry a$$ didn't get involved & make Bobby suspend Ernie & AJ?

Welcome to the Bowden conference people!

USC pays players to the tune of $118,000.00 dollars & no suspensions!

OSU pays Clarret & plays him in a NC game? Where's their suspensions?

ND had muck all over them from Lou Holtz cheating like crazy when he was the coach & they got 1 loss of scholarship for two years?

It called BS double standard! UM is still being punished for kicking the dog piss out of the powers that be. That's why we don't hear anymore on USC! That's why OSU's tainted NC is never brought up! You think we'd hear the end of it if UM pulled this crap?

Fighting Ibis,

You are 100% correct on all points.

UF can fucking reinstate Marcus Thomas after two failed drug tests and yet Moore is still suspended even though the Gables police have already said they aren't filing charges! Coker does deserve to be canned for this!

Dude, whoa down on M. Thomas.

Smokin weed doesn't make you better son, it just makes you dumb!

Kyle Wright is being suspended! I just heard from a reliable source! Will have much more later!

Everybody is talking about this stupid fight and not how the Gators were jobbed, robbed of a national title by the SEC refs who had fixed the game in Auburn's favor. Anyone who watched that game knows it was fixed.

Fisting Ibis,

As much as I like to see you cry like the little bitch that you are, Miami is getting less than it deserves. You can bring up all the historical facts you want, but its 2006 and acting like a bafoon on the college football field is not allowed.

FSU's players that got into trouble, didnt do it on national television or have their actions replayed a 1000 times for everyone to see.

Ernie and AJ didnt make a video of their lewd acts and broadcast it on SportsCenter.

Lamar Thomas is a dumb (______)! He was on 790AM in the "A" this morning and still thinks he isnt wrong for his comments.

Another failure of the UM system to produce a quality individual in our society,

As painful as it is to agree with you, you make a valid point Jim Rome.

UM asked that Thomas be fired and CSS complied. Hopefully Shalala has more up her sleeve then just canning our TV color guy to put this mess behind us.

The bottom line is, after reflection the last two nights that Coker has lost control of this team. Do you think if Butch were still coaching this team everyone would have stormed the field? Hell no! They would have been scared shitless of the consequences laid down in house, let alone from the ACC or NCAA.

Butch Davis would have come to practice on Monday drunk off his ass and in a fighting rage. He would have lined up (without pads on) and taken on every suspended player in one on one drills.

Its hard to correct the actions of individuals without the entire team taking on some responsibility. Do you think a "code red" is warranted?

Scholarship athlete or not, if I am a kicker and the other team beats my ass, I surely want the rest of my team to stand up for me. However, I'd much rather take the 15 yard penalty and have my defense pitch a shutout.

I think the entire FIU team is a bunch of cowards for firstly going after a kicker (holder) and secondly for picking on a white guy (with the least amount of pads on).

One thing is for sure, the next time these two teams play, there is a much higehr chance that the OB will be sold out!

Anonymous said...

Not to mention the holder is a walk on and a skinny white guy. good points again Jim Rome.

Nice editorial...perhaps the commentators should look at their own too...Marv Albert, Lamar Thomas, Pat O'Brien, etc. Last I heard, Mave Albert was fired from any commentating jobs...oh wait, a year later MSG brought him back on to cover the suck Knicks. And he was back on NBC in no time. Short memory. And Pat O'Brien just has to head to treatment and all is forgotten. Maybe Coker should say he has an addiction to trying to win with thug players and all will be forgotton.

God Bless

Kartik, not only do the Vols play criminals and thugs but guys like Leonard Little and Dwayne Goodrich who went to the NFL and murdered people went to Tennessee and played for "Phat Phil." Oh and Jamal Lewis went to jail didn't he? Travis Henry was suspended a season for flunking 3 drug tests. The list of Tennessee thugs and criminals goes on and on. Miami has a problem and needs to crack down no doubt. But they aren't even close to Tennessee level yet.

The police report said Crowder was about to fight a guy as a crowd gathered. A cop told them to break it up. A few minutes later, Crowder was in another parking lot about to scrap with another man. They ran when police showed up, with one officer falling as he tried to apprehend Crowder. The player ran until the policeman reportedly yelled, "Channing, I know who you are."

Anonymous,

You are picking on Tennessee to harshly. They do have quality athletes such as Albert Haynesworth. He was just having someone take a close look at his cleats.

Kartik I am very dissapointed in you. In this article you are covering up for the thugish, reckless, out of control Volunteer program! You said sixteen arrests.....the number is actually 24! Get your facts right before you make Tennessee look better than they deserve to.

Miami is held to a higher standard because Miami has set a higher standard. The 'Canes have won five national titles in 23 years. They play on national television as often as any program outside of Notre Dame. Right or wrong, they are one of the elite programs that represents college football to the rest of the country. And they just screwed it up for everyone else.

Florida State receiver Gardner arrested
FSU fans seem to be having a field day attacking the Canes......those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State receiver Talman Gardner was charged Monday with marijuana possession and having a concealed and loaded handgun.

The gun charge is a felony and the drug charge is a misdemeanor. The 23-year-old player was released but officials did not immediately say if he had to post bond.

Gardner has been projected as possibly a second- or third-round draft choice this month. Florida State officials, including coach Bobby Bowden, did not immediately return calls.

One of the fastest players at Florida State, Gardner caught 89 passes for 1,589 yards and 19 touchdowns during his career.

The arrest is the latest embarrassment for the university, whose football players have faced assorted legal and disciplinary problems this year.

Gardner and another former Seminole player, Malcolm Tatum, were stopped early Monday by Capitol Police. The officers had been following the players, who were driving slowly through an area of state office buildings.

Both players are no longer in school. Neither player has a listed phone number, and neither could be immediately reached.

Tatum was arrested on a warrant for civil contempt, which he resolved before being released. The 24-year-old Tatum played little last season in his senior year.

Earlier this season, former quarterback Adrian McPherson was charged with gambling and writing bad checks and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett was charged with receiving improper discounts on merchandise. Also, quarterback Chris Rix was suspended for the Sugar Bowl after he overslept and missed a final exam.

Graham says leg might have been twisted in pileup

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida tailback Earnest Graham, who found out Sunday he'll miss three to five weeks because of a sprained right knee, claims the injury might not have been an accident.

Graham, who left No. 3 Florida's 37-13 victory over Florida State on crutches Saturday night, told coach Steve Spurrier that a Seminoles defender may have injured his right knee by twisting his leg in the pile after a tackle.

"I hate to bring it up, but I've got to say something on behalf of Earnest Graham," Spurrier said. "If it happened, we'll let the proper people look at the thing, because I know Bobby Bowden wouldn't have a player try to twist a guy's leg in the bottom of the pileup."

There are no replays that clearly show the end of the play where Graham injured the knee. Florida State lineman Darnell Dockett is listed as the tackler on the play.

Spurrier spoke after reviewing game tapes.

"The tape didn't show it clearly, but the guy was doing something down there," Spurrier told the Palm Beach Post.

According to a story in Monday's editions of the Post, Dockett was overheard discussing the play after the game and saying to teammates, "Did you guys see what I did to Earnest Graham?"

"In the history of college football, I've heard of people twisting an ankle, but how are you going to twist a knee?" Bowden said. "I'm not mad at Steve. Steve might be kidding. But I'm thinking, I've heard of twisting an ankle in the pile, but I don't know how you twist a knee."

Dockett's public comments after the game were of a general nature. "It's hard to talk about this game right now, but we're going to have to take this loss like the rest of them," Dockett was quoted as saying in the Post. "They had clutch plays and made the plays they needed to. Our biggest goal as the defensive line was to get pressure on (Gators quarterback) Rex Grossman."

Robert Gillespie will start at running back for Florida (9-1) against Tennessee on Dec. 1, Spurrier said. The last time Graham was injured and could not play, at Auburn, Florida struggled to convert on third down, suffered the second-lowest rushing total in school history (negative 36 yards) and wound up losing for the only time this season.

Ran Carthon also will see time at running back.

Spurrier said team doctors diagnosed it as a sprained knee. If Graham misses even three weeks, he would be out of Florida's game Dec. 1 against Tennessee and the SEC title game if the Gators make it.

Whatever the outcome, the accusation is sure to carry over to next year in this, one of the country's best rivalries, albeit a watered-down affair because of Florida State's struggles this season. The Seminoles are not ranked in the AP media poll for the first time since September 1989.
