ACC Coaching Rumors and Reality

North Carolina's firing of John Bunting on Sunday has opened the door for several coaching changes in the ACC. Rumors strongly link former Miami coach Butch Davis with job, but Dan Sileo reported this morning on AM 620 in Tampa that Davis is already talking to UM about replacing Larry Coker at season's end. Apparently Davis according to other reports on the internet is interested in the Alabama job should Mike Shula either be fired (a loss this season to Auburn would make him 0-4 vs the Tigers and he is 1-3 vs Tennessee) or decide to move on. Additional rumors like Nick Saban who in my opinion is unlikely to be fired by the Dolphins to the University of Miami job should Larry Coker be fired.

Rumors that Bill Cowher will retire from NFL Coaching if the job at his alma mater, NC State is open continue to persist, as do the rumors of alumni discontent with Bobby Bowden and a full court press coming on West Virginia Coach Rich Rodriguez to take over at FSU.

These rumors are fun, but I wouldn't put much stock in any of them. I believe that Nick Saban will be coaching the Dolphins next year and Bobby Bowden is still 3 or 4 years away from retiring. I can see Butch Davis going to Alabama, but the North Carolina job seems less likely to me. Miami, I believe will look for an up and coming head coach.....when Miami offered Jim Tressel the job several years ago and he accepted before turning it down the next morning, they were being proactive knowing they were going to be recruiting against older coaches like Steve Spurrier and Bobby Bowden. Miami, I believe will go all out for Greg Schiano. If he says no, which is likely look for someone like Jim Leavitt from USF, Gary Patterson from TCU or Jeff Tedford from Cal.

Back to NC State. While Chuck Amato is among the worst game day coaches around (as is Butch Davis, BTW) he is an excellent recruiter and I would be surprised given the embarresment NC State suffered in trying to replace Herb Sendek this past year if they would make another coaching move so quickly after that debacle. That having been said, Amato needs a few more wins to be safe.

The next few weeks will be fun for speculation, but I would shocked if we see several big names shuffle as is being talked about widely all over the internet.

What is wrong with the job my husband is doing?

I'm tired of everybody taking shots at him.

He's a great coach and a good man.

John Bunting is a complete joke. Please correct me, didn't he beat Miami two years ago?

I hope Butch doesn't come back to the U. We need to get a young hungry coach, not a guy who will leave the program after a few years. I won't forgive him for what he did.

Cane Fanatic,

Why in the world would you waste your time? Do you like to inflict pain on yourself? Why don't you rent a porno and beat off? You'll get more enjoyment.

If I'm going to Atlanta I'm going to a strip club. Like the one where Patrick Ewing went to.

I would like to extend 2 all-inclusive passes to Shady Pines Retirement homes: 1 for Coach Coker and 1 for Bobby Bowden. Tuesday is Meatloaf and Monopoly night.

Shouldn't John Bunting be in that same retirement home? Maybe Bill Parcells also!
