Today's pathetic performances by once proud programs in Tallahassee and Durham showed beyond any question that two programs that defined College Football in the 1980s and changed the game have become once again mirror images of one another. From the early 1980s thru the mid 1990s Miami and FSU had more speed, more innovation and more success than any other programs in the nation. Now in 2006, the two programs join Georgia as the teams doing the least with the most talent. Florida State gave up on running the football several years ago and went to spread oriented shotgun offense. This year Miami, despite having a RB arsenal most ACC teams outside of Clemson would covet has decided to do the same. Copying Jeff Bowden shouldearn any coach a quick ticket to the unemployment line, but Miami coordinator Rich Olson, late of the NFL seems to think Miami should run Jeff Bowden's chuck and duck offense and today it was on display. Despite leading the whole afternoon, Miami had Kyle Wright operating out of the shotgun on every first down play in the 2nd half save one. Much like FSU, Olson resorted to quick screens and jump balls to make this offense work. The net result was Miami's lowest rushing output against a team with a losing record since a 1979 game versus La. Tech. (Yes, I looked that up.)
As bad as things are in Coral Gables, the situation in Tallahassee is worse even though FSU did beat Miami in a game that set Football back 50 years, last month. FSU is completely incapable of running the football and the mental mistakes that have plagued FSU for years are getting more and more damaging. Miami today did their best FSU imitation with 5 personal foul penalties, most of which either kept Duke drives alive and stalled UM drives.
Miami has been officially Bowdenized and FSU has been officially Cokerized. It's time for both programs to move on.
Other Thoughts:
- Georgia just escaped versus Miss State today between the hedges.
- Bill Callahan's clock management and play calling in the last minute today versus Texas is a quick lesson as to why he didn't last as an NFL Heacd Coach very long.
- I'm not sure why UCLA was playing a soft zone instead of a straight prevent in the last minute.
- C.J. Spiller could have been a difference maker for Florida. At FSU he would have been wasted. Tommy Bowden is using him better than anyone could have though and that's probably why he choose Clemson.
- Reggie Ball is still Reggie Ball. One game on fire, the next cold as ice.
- Kirk Ferentz probably should have left Iowa when he could.
- Rutgers win at Pitt today put them in the driver's seat for the Big East title. Seriously, it does. Both West Va and Louisville go to Pitt in the upcoming weeks in addition to playing one another. Rutgers also plays both and based on Ray Rice's hard running today, they can effectively control the clock against both and keep the high octane offenses on the sideline.
- Brian Brohm doesn't look right. If I were Bobby Petrino i'd consult with the doctors and possibly bring Hunter Cantwell back in the starting lineup for the forseeable future.
- Washington will learn how to win. Eventually.
- I'm going to for once give John L. Smith some love. See I did it! Moving on.........
- ESPN decided to continue bashing Miami today by actively on the air rooting for Duke while commending Philip Fulmer whose Tennessee team has suffered 28 arrests (as compared to ZERO for Miami) in the past two years for character building with good kids. Some quotes:
Linda Cohn: " Duke will be America's Team if they beat Miami."
Trevor Matich: "It's a shame this game is even being played. Miami should have cancelled the rest of its season."
Matich again: "Donna Shalala should resign as President of that University."
John Saunders. "I found myself rooting for Duke today."
Craig James: "It's a shame Duke didn't win."
Lou Holtz: "Philip Fulmer has instilled a discipline and character into this Tennessee team."
Mark May: "I agree. Fulmer is one the best coaches in America with a great group of kids."
REPORTERS, STUDIO HOSTS AND COMMENTATORS ARE SUPPOSED TO ADHERE TO SOME LEVEL OF PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVITY. OPENLY ROOTING FOR ONE TEAM OVER ANOTHER ON A NATIONAL NETWORK SHOULD RESULT IN IMMEDIATE TERMINATION, ESPECIALLY FROM VETERANS SUCH AS COHN AND SAUNDERS.

ESPN is a disgrace. I am not a Miami fan, but I am sick and tired of hearing about the brawl. It could happen anywhere and the fact is the other team from Miami who had a bunch of envious players who wanted to play for Miami started it.
When was the last time Miami and FSU had a brawl?
Just now on the Sports Reporters while the World Series and NFL are going on the brawl was the top story and Mike Lupica said he feels Miami should be given the death penalty.
Will Coker do the right thing and resign this week?
I personally will never give up on the U, the players or the CEO. But having said that, I cannot prevent the players from giving up on themselves. I support them through thick and thin. Yes I was unhappy with the conduct displayed last week against FIU, and I was hoping for some ray of hope from it in the form of playing with unity and passion.
I am hoping that Saturday against Duke was a simple case of " looking ahead " I for the life cannot figure out why the Canes play " down " to their competition. I only hope they bring their heart, their passion and their commitment against G-Tech or this season will be over.
But regardless of the outcome against G-Tech, I will forever support this team, its players and its coach !!!
I was rooting for Duke too!
Hey Gregg,
The Duke Lacrosse team was never found guilty of anything. And since when it is a crime to not pay a stripper when she's butt-ugly or has a nasty pussy?
Just because the Lacrosse team is all white, does not mean they cant misbehave and practive extreme wrestling moves on other teams.
You know why they call it "Cracker Barrel."
Duke had their chances.
Duke is one of the few schools left that has student athletes. It's not fair for them to have to play thugs like Miami.
I never give up on FSU because their fat dumb defensive coordinator is always telling his boys to injure anyone on the other team.
Also I think Duke has learned to stay away from black strippers.
As you may know I hate FSU... and while sitting in the stands on Saturday, laughing out loud, I heard a wonderful thing. The fans loudly booed their own team!!!!
YES, THEY BOOED THE SHIT OUT OF THE TEAM. The booed the white players and the black players, theven even booed the players that werent white or black.
Now this wasnt the ordinary kind of booing, and it surely wasnt the type of booing that the media so graciously covered with Florida and Chris Leak. This booing was vicious! It was malicious! It was DELICIOUS!
FSU sucks shit and anything else that comes out of the human body. They have ZERO run blocking and ZERO ability to play with urgency. FSU fucked a football for more than 10 minutes (starting at the end of the third qtr and 9 minutes of the 4th) and came up EMPTY.
INEPT COACHING, people named Bowden, and some piss poor recruiting.
Look for FSU to suffer for many years to come... at least until Bobby et al is gone!
I think everybody needs to sit down and talk their issues out.
Especially you Richard. What are you still doing running around in those tiny little red shorts.
News Alert!!!!
Report out of Coral Gables has Larry Coker still being the hEad Coach of this team for the rest of the season.
So all those Coker haters, you better learn to live with it for the rest of the year.
News Alert!!!
The report out of Tallahassee has Bobby keeping Jeff on board for another two seasons but hiring his son Terry to oversee the rest of the staff.
Where is Wyatt Sexton?
Florida State may have a losing record this year.
Or they may be 6-6.
Jim Rome,
My show is better than yours because Oprah likes me.
I don't like you using my good name.
I believe FSU still has a chance to get to the ACC title game.
I really like how the Seminole running game is improving from last year.
I feel the team is finally starting to come around.
The running game is clicking and Kyle is playing his best ball.
We have things on the right track. Now we just got to get the guys on the field.
I'll continue to recruit just like I have every year, making stops at Levinworth, Rikers Island, and Shawshank looking for the next Reddick and Meriweather.
Prison is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you gonna find in those cells.
We'll get back on the correctional facilities bus and really win more.
I forgot...I'll also be stopping at Starke and Lawty. They are some of my favorites.
Coker you have no chance in Lawtey or Starke. Me and the Zooker cornered the market years ago. If a kid wants to go to jail he comes to Tennesssee. My concern is that the Illini are making a real play now with the Zooker & co. up there. Amato likes the correctional system also and NC State is cutting into our recruiting base.
I'm no goodie too shoes like Butch Davis. That dude wouldn't even get near a prison and that's why Miami lost 66-13 to the Cuse. I wanted to bring the jailbirds in but he said no.
Hey Kartik that QB Grothe you love so much sucks!
I saw USF get pounded last night on national TV. Are you still going to rank them in the top 25? They only beat FIU by 1 point!
Coach Coker and Bowden called me so I can bring them the "cream" and "clear". I'm headed there after I leave Knoxville.
I also have a new product called the "brown" that Detriot Tiger's pitchers like to use.
I bet UM beats the hell out of BC! Especially with R.Moore back in action. Suddenly UM doesn't seem so thin at WR? Our defense is stacked unlike FSU's! And we have a ground game to keep them honest.
FSU is one dimensional & that's why you lost to BC! You can't win by throwing on every down against good teams.
