Embarrassed: Young Canes Humbled in Gainesville

Irrespective of the surprised reaction by many of the ESPN crew at how well the baby Canes performed for three quarters against the over rated Gators ( a team that lost four games last season), Miami once again proved it is light years away from being a contender even in the woeful ACC with a pitiful fourth quarter display.

Miami's inability to actually line up and run the ball at an undersized defensive front does not bode well for the rest of the season. Realizing this, Pat Nix called one heck of a game, trying to keep the Gators off balance for much of the evening, but when the gimmicks finally run out you are left with nothing but a dam that is about to break and did break.

Miami fans on the internet are talking of pride tonight in their young team. Why? Florida is not Southern Cal, or Ohio State or even Florida State not so long ago. Florida is a program as we have taken great pains to demonstrate on this blog site that has essentially conned their way into two BCS/BA title games and has not played a non conference game outside of their home state since 1991, the longest such streak in D 1A football. In other words, Florida is an unworthy opponent and Miami's loss to them is without a doubt in my mind as someone who has watched the Canes since the early 80s the low point of a steady decline.

Miami's performance has me concerned that this team could get beat in their remaining two non league games with ease: at Texas A&M who badly needs to win that game and against a very talented UCF team. The Canes must improve on offense quickly and without Javarris James, I would be surprised if it happens. Miami defense held up well but like last season, getting zero help from an inept offense meant the team was gassed by the time the 4th quarter. While this game was largely meaningless, in the goal to try and compete in the ACC this year, I don't think the ship is yet pointed in the direction it needs to be.

Miami is even worse than last season at this early stage of this year. With five consecutive losses to D1 A teams Miami has lost more games in a row than it lost total in a five year stretch between 2000 and 2004. The same for the period between 1988 and 1992 or 1986 and 1990. In other words, Miami is at rock bottom.

More later on specific players, Florida's attempts to run up the score and analysis of the game itself.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY TOO NEGATIVE.

MAN I KNOW IT HURTS TO LOSE TO THE GATES, BUT C'MON WE PLAYED A HECK OF A GAME!

The offense was so bland and predictable. Did we pass once on 1st down all night? Defense is there but special teams and offense are lacking.

I think we are going to do well in conference play, I think we can will all of the games, just got to get some points...we need to run hard, use the TE and get the ball downfield...work on those special teams some more, and keep playin tough D

In my opinion , we had too many 3 to 5 yard passes. This means you had to have three consecutive such palys to get a first down. The way the receivers were dropping the ball, this probably is not going to happen. Nix needs to call more 8 to 15 yard passes. It increases our chances of getting a first down and looses up the defense. I would review game film and find out who are our realiable receivers .

It doesn't matter what type of recruiting class we have in terms of offensive talent.

As long as Nix is the OC, he will keep our offense down. We've seen the same vanilla offense for 2 years now. A high school kid would have to be an absolute MORON to want to come play for this offense. Hey Nationally Ranked WR...come play for the Canes! We'll throw the ball down-field 2 times per game. We'll run a delayed draw 30 times and we'll run a WR screen 5 times. No matter the opponent, the score, the situation. How's that for an exciting offense?

I still think that call were they reviewed whether the Gator Reciever/TE made the catch going out of bounds ( he clearly didn't have possesion) no foot in bounds but wait! his Elbow was in ok sure without that bad call the gators would have had 4th and 9.

I'm pretty disgusted by what we saw tonight out of the offense. Granted Baby J went out early but this defense was shredded last year by Michigan and LSU but we took no chances running a totally conservative game plan.

Our team isn't going to be better than 5-7 this season unless the offense opens up a bit. While this post may be over the top in its negativity I do agree that Florida is not USC or Oklahoma and pretending they are and playing scared is an embarrassment to the program.

It does not matter how good the defense is. This offense is totally useless. At least we now realize it wasn't just because of KW and KF.

Once we fire Nix things won't be so gloomy. Until then, forget it, we are sunk.

You know I think our defense quit after that Harvin option play. But honestly, this team tonight looked primed and ready, but at some point your WRs have to learn to catch the ball and your DBs have to make plays like the one Harris dropped that could have been brought back for a TD. In time we will make those plays, but the play calling on offense is pathetic. Thankfully the ACC is weak but we've shown no ability to go on the road and close out a game late except against FSU. Otherwise our fourth quarters on the road the last few seasons have been pathetic and lopsided. Maybe Swansey needs to work on the conditioning with these guys more.

Weak effort. You guys didn't play to win -- you played to not get blown out. That was a really ugly game to watch. So congrats-- you kept the scoreline more respectable than FSU does.

Now take your candy and go back to your corner!

As a Gator fan I am totally embarrassed for you. A team with so much raw talent and speed, maybe the only team to shut Timmy T down for 3 quarters ever has such a bad offensive scheme that u guys never had a chance.

enjoy being home for christmas again this year.

Nix called a good game? Whatever may be valid in the rest of your post can be safely ignored based on that one statement. Here is our playbook

MIAMI HURRICANE PLAYBOOK:

1. Shotgun zone blocking, delay handoff up middle.
2. Run left
3. Run right
4. Bubble screen
5. PA Bootleg option

okay I saw that posted somewhere else but it was too good not be placed here as well.

bottom line: we're not getting better until Randy does the right thing and brings in a real coordinator who runs a real offense. A miami offense.

I'm a Gators fan, so I'll give you guys an outsider's perspective on the Canes. You guys have still got a long ways to go, but there some bright spots. Here were my observations:

1) The play-calling was extremely, extremely conservative. The UM coaches seemed to be trying not to get blown out or embarrassed. Didn't want to shatter the underclassmen's confidence. They were just trying to keep it close -- not really playing to win.

2) Miami's D-Line is excellent.

3) Miami's defensive speed is second to none.

4) Offense is a problem. The O-line is mediocre, the receivers are really bad, and the QB play is poor (although he's still young).

5) Must have better special teams play. You guys can't afford to sabotage yourselves with special teams failures.

6) Overall, you should probably be satisfied with the outcome. It wasn't an embarrassment, the youngsters shouldn't be shell-shocked by it, and there were successes to build on.

So they can recruit.

Bill Young impressed me. Let him run the ship the rest of the year.

Unless we are playing FSU we come in too scared to play against everyone we face.

The criticism of Nix is unfair. I think the goal was to keep the Gator offense off the field and out of sync and that worked for three quarters.

It was only when we had to begin chasing the game that things fell apart.

Really for three quarters with two freshman QBs we did everything we needed to do.

Now as a pure canes fan i must say theres no reason reason we should have lost that game. it was very winnable. i mean the gators dont suck but we put ourselves in terrible positions and still should have performed better. we screwed ourselves on that shanked punt, then the penalty that led to the blocked point. we basically gave them 9 points in a tight game. as far as meyer running up the score at the end, i would have sent a lineman to hit tebow regardless. i'd take the penalties.

kartik dude, how can u defend nix?

what game were u watching to say he called a good game?

what planet are u on?

The Hurricanes aren't as bad as some thought. Still, there is a lot of work needed, mainly on offense. Eventually, the coaches are going to have to take the training wheels off Robert Marve and Jacory Harris. Let them make plays. No more of this letting the quarterbacks manage the game. They're too talented for that.

I'm happy with the way we played, except the way the offense plays were called. Nix does not have it within him. Same as last year, he had flashes, but overall it was a poorly called game. He and Pannunzio need to be fired. But overall, we had them on their heels the entire game. Our defense brought it possibly better than any other team to go up against the "Tebow led offense". We had them worried.

Will happen eventually. Maybe not in College Station but certainly soon thereafter.

Until our receivers begin to learn how to catch easy balls we're going to lose to anyone with a pulse. That's the bottom line on everything.

We suck, plain and simple. Our freshmen are being thrown to the wolves thanks to terrible coaching except young and a bunch of cokerized losers in front of them. When will the Cokerization finally end?

Running up the score?

Scoring 26 points isn't running up the score particularly against a team that has made a living of running it up on helpless opponents in the past.

Where is the rest of the post game stuff?

Nix sux, talk about the Gators knowing what we were going to run on every down. Fire him now!!!

hankerson looked scared all game, even when he made a play. I am dissappointed that Marve never had the chance to go downfield. UF's D was gassed, and Nix never tried to stretch the field.

Our boys just need to catch the rock. He want our Wr's to make plays after the catch that's the whole point. Our O-line need to create holes so the RB's can go and protect the QB. I believe Caoch Nix was calling the right plays, we just need to capitalize next time that's all. I'm proud of our boys they did a good job, playing against the #5 team in the country. My prediction was 8-4 now its 10-2. I believe in them. The "U" is back. That's on the for real.

nix's biggest problem - pulling marve after a solid drive. let the kid build something. #2 you can't play 8 guys at WR. pick 4, keep 2 in most of the time. you need to get a rythm. the other thing is 1 seris we have 3 te's, the next is spread option, the next is 1 formation. i understand a change of pace but you have to establish a base to change things up with.

the only offensive play i saw that gave me any hope was a pass that hank dove for from marve - good pass - good catch and seemed to be in a good rythm.
