Charleston Southern Postgame Thoughts

Nice crowd on hand tonight. I assumed the crowd would be so small that sitting in the upper deck meant you could move downstairs but that was not the case. A big following for the Northwestern kids was presents.

You really cannot take much from this game. Unlike the WQAM postgame team I wasn't overly impressed by Jacory Harris. He seemed late with his throws a few times when he had receivers open, but then again it was his first start. Moreover, after being through three years of Kyle Wright who last led UM to a win over a conference opponent with a winning record as a Sophomore, the bashing of Brock Berlin I thought on the show was out of place.

I thought the young receivers looked solid. Aladarius Johnson ran some nice patterns and the other freshman all looked decent. But again I believe Sam Shields and Leonard Hankerson are going to have to really step up. Hankerson caught on two successive plays a nice corner fade like the one he caught last year in Blacksburg.

Sean Spence was awesome on defense. I didn't think Glen Cook looked totally back in the swing of thing misreading some plays and over pursuing at times. Maybe Spencer Adkins is a better option or maybe this is Arthur Brown's opening?

Graig Cooper is the gamebreaker for this team. Why he appeared to be the third team running back is a mystery to me and I certainly hope it is for one game only.

More tomorrow including a postgame wrapup podcast.

Adkins was playing on the line for both those sacks. You are right that he's a LB, but he shifted to the line for much of the game.

Okay...I am seeing some improvement. I think that our kicking game needs some work. However, you can tell the speed has improved.

Coop looks good but he is not a match with Shannon. Keep in mind he was recruited by Coker and seems to be running afoul of Shannon's rules. The same for Shields. It's probable that Cooper will not play as big a role this year. Gametime starts on the practice field.

I would give the team a B for what I saw but keep in mind this was an incomplete roster with no Marve or about 5 defensive players who will make a huge impact.

I think the effort was as uneven as most opening game are. The key is regaining our competitiveness.

We're not going to beat Florida. We know that.

We are probably not going to beat Wake. We know that.

But of the remanning nine game, we can win as many as six and feel good about ourselves.

We can achieve a winning ACC record, make a decent bowl and point towards an ACC title in 2009, and bigger things in 2010.
