McNeal OUT. Cooper Questionable for Va Tech

Randy Shannon's decision to play Graig Cooper late on Saturday with the Hurricanes trailing Virginia 41-0 could have disastrous consequences. The Hurricanes leading rusher was injured and has not practiced this week. Any chance of Cooper getting to 1,000 yards or even of breaking Miami's Freshman rushing record is unlikely now. Shawnbrey McNeal is also injured thanks to a missed block by fellow kick returner Ryan Hill. McNeal who exploded versus Georgia Tech hasn't played a full game since, and hasn't carried the ball once since a fumble versus Florida State. While McNeal gave the Hurricanes a boost in the loss to Georgia Tech (in fact McNeal single handily kept Miami in the game) it must be wondered at this point whether not redshirting the explosive McNeal who plays at the Hurricanes deepest position was wise on the part of the coaching staff.

Without Cooper, any chance of upseting Virginia Tech and keeping hopes, albeit dim hopes of a bowl bid alive are out the window. Shannon clearly still has some seasoning as a Head Coach based on his handling of both Cooper and McNeal.

It is amazing the number of top RBs we've recruited especially when you include D. Thomas, A. Johnson and C. Jones and yet we can't recruit anyone at another position on offense. Our TEs play hard but they are limited and we haven't recruited a top WR forever. Walden, R. Jones and K. Jones were all lower rated recruits that Coker took chances on, and S. Shields, well rivals had him high but Scout had him lower.
