On a cold November Baltimore day, the Vinny Testeverde Hurricanes avenged one of the most embarrassing defeats in the history of College Football with a hard fought win over #19 Maryland. A year previously Miami, ranked 6th entering this game was leading ranked fourth in the nation and leading Maryland 31-0 at halftime. Then the fiercest comeback in Orange Bowl history saw UM's defense collapse and a 42-40 loss that sent Miami into a free fall for the remainder of the season.
A year later the game between the two teams had been moved to Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and the place was rocking. Having lost the Baltimore Colts less than two years earlier, Baltimore had embraced the Terps and gave the Hurricanes all they could handle. Maryland QB Stan Gelbaugh had a solid game and the Terps hung tough. But two late Vinny Testeverde touchdown bombs, one to Michael Irvin and another to Mel Bratton sealed a 29-22 Hurricane victory in a very hostile atmosphere. As a sidenote this was the only week prior to 1994 that the Florida Gators were ranked #1 in the nation. They were thumped by #17 Georgia 24-3 and fell from the top spot.
