This was an often forgotten about game in the Miami-Penn State series. The Hurricanes entered the match up with the #7 Nittany Lions ranked #2 in the nation and had just defeated Florida State at home the previous week. However, odds makers made Penn State a 2.5 point favorite as Miami has been somewhat unconvincing in its previous two wins over Arizona and FSU. Any trip to Happy Valley is tough, but this was considered to be perhaps Miami's most difficult trip of the 1992 season.
The Canes entered the game next to last in rushing offense in NCAA D1 Football. However a surprising game plan by Dennis Erickson led to the Canes stuffing the ball down the Lions throat to take an early 7-0 lead, thanks largely to Donnell Bennett's strong between the tackles running. But Penn State played well on offense featuring a balanced attack. Future Miami Dolphins Troy Drayton and O.J. McDuffie both had big games and Richie Anderson ran well against the Canes front seven.
Darren Krien became the hero of the game with a fumble return for a TD which sealed the UM win 17-14. The win was so impressive in hostile surroundings that the venerable Keith Jackson remarked "never have I seen a team win two games against quality opponents like this in consecutive weeks." the Canes had done it again!
