Back to School!

Nick Saban Knows What Readers of This Site Know: College Beats the Daylights out of the NFL .........................

While the judgmental and shortsighted south Florida sports media elite piles on Nick Saban, let may say several words in his defense and praise him for the excellent lifestyle choice he has made. Much like June Jones (Chargers to Hawaii in 1999) and Al Groh (Jets to UVA in 2001) Saban realizes the NFL is too corporate a league with inflated expectations both from ownership and the fans. One can never truly be happy or fulfilled in the NFL, particularly in a bush league market like south Florida, where the fans of the Miami Dolphins expect to win the Super Bowl every year with 6-10 caliber talent. The Dolphins plight is similar to that of the credit card addict that spends tons of money, runs up big bills and then two years later cannot understand why they can't use the credit card again and why they are a financial mess. The Dolphins have for years and years mismanaged the NFL's salary cap, and made poor personnel decisions, yet Dolphin fans expected a Super Bowl out of just Nick Saban two seasons after he inherited a bad 4-12 team, with salary cap issues, a horrible roster and the ongoing Ricky Williams saga. The south Florida sports fans expect championships from the Dolphins even though the local College Football team has played in 10 national championship games since the Dolphins last went to the Super Bowl. University of Miami Football, not the Dolphins is the real spirit and heartbeat of south Florida, with 60% of the UM roster coming from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. South Florida sports fans expect championships out of the Dolphins even though the franchise who has seen 24 of the other 31 NFL franchsises play in a conference title games since the Dolphins last trip to the AFC Championship continues to make bad decisions on players and draft picks in almost comical fashion. Simply put the Dolphins are just a glorified version of the Arizona Cardinals, and a poor man's Los Angeles Clippers.

College Sports is where it's at. You can impact the lives of youngsters while building a legacy, especially at a school like Alabama which is one of the elite national programs. You can maintain a semblance of humanity and not have to fight with overbearing, know it all big city reporters every day even during the offseason. You can own a large home and travel and not work 24/7. Oh, and you can play Football your way and bring in players who will play your way. College Football. Nick Saban and the rest of us know, it is the best thing going.

I should point out Saban's first order of business will be to lock down Robert Marve one of the top QB's in the nation who was locked into Bama before Shula's firing but is now looking around and is rumored to be visiting Miami unofficially later this week.

Saban better try to get his staff in order first. Bama is way behind for the class of 2007 for recruting. Although I agree that a College job would likely be more fun than the NFL (assuming you don't mind recruting), I would not like to take an Alabama job. Just about any other college would be great.

God Bless

To the last anonymous poster, no he's not like Larry Brown. If Larry Brown had this much talent, he would actually win. Isaiah Thomas sucks as a person, sucks as a GM, sucks as everything -- that's why Larry Brown couldn't win. Give him a front office with a clear head on its shoulders -- like in Detroit -- and he flourishes.

Who the fuck cares about Saban... like the 2-Live Stew's said today on ATL radio... Alabama is maybe the 4th best team in the SEC. Florida, Auburn, LSU, and Arkansas are all better not to mention Tennessee which has potential (just as soon as Fulmer is canned) and sometimes Georgia shows signs of life.

Alabama is a has-been program with a lying sack-o-shit coach. What's there to worry about? The Dolphins sure did fuck up, but hey what else is new. Its not like the Ricky Williams fiasco was any help, and picking up Mr. INT (Dumbpepper) himself wasnt a complete bust.

Saban is a piece of ass meat. The Miami media has nothing else to write about as its purely evident that the Heat are crappy now, the Panthers are rubbish, and well.... cricket is only covered once a week.

Just be happy you have nice weather!

Jim Rome:
Maybe Arkansas was better than Bama this year but to claim Arkansas is better than Bama as a overall program is just plain dumb. You know better. You know every 4th or 5th year Arkansas shows signs of life and then fades back into oblivion. No way they have a better program than anyone you mentioned including Georgia or Tennessee. Despite down years the FSU and Miami teams you love to bash have far superior programs to Arkansas. Arkansas last conference title was in 1988 in the old SWC, and even in the SWC they made a bad habit of always losing to Texas, regardless of how bad Texas was. Arkansas is a wanna be program......it has been since the 15-14 loss to Texas in 1969 and continues to be.

Horns, Hogs and Nixon's Coming is a great college football book BTW. Check it out if you haven't read it.

BAMA WILL BE BACK ON TOP SOON!!!!!

Kartik,

I never said anything about an "overall program!

What proof or evidence do you have that makes you think Alabama will be back to Bear Bryant greatness anytime soon? Shula couldnt do it, Tyrone Prothro couldnt do it, Brody Croyle couldnt!

With another new coach, Alabama isnt going to be the top SEC football team for atleast 5 years... and thats if, and only if Tim Tebow is a bust.

Define "program" and then we can fully compare the state schools!!!
