# 3: 2001 Miami Hurricanes

One of four teams from the state of Florida to finish a season undefeated and untied, the 2001 Canes produced 17 first round NFL draft picks from its roster. ( Only two of the undefeated, untied teams made the list.....sorry but I could find no justification for including the lucky 1987 Miami team or the even luckier 1991 Miami team on the list) But the most important player on the team wasn't drafted until round 7. That would of course be Ken Dorsey one of the smartest and winning-est QBs to ever play College Football.

While this team went unbeaten you could question how good they really were and whether they were really the best team in the nation in 2001. Why? Well because unlike most Miami teams this particular team struggled against inferior opposition and also because they got the gift of playing Nebraska instead of Oregon, Col orado, Florida, Tennessee, Texas or Oklahoma in the national title game. Each of the aforementioned teams was far superior to Nebraska and would have given Miami more of a fight than Nebraska. (In fact, I maintain Oregon would have had a 50-50 chance to beat Miami because PAC 10 teams usually beat up on Rose Bowl newcomers which Miami was that year) But perhaps after the BCS snafu of 2000, the computers felt they owed Miami so they made sure they played the weakest possible team. Then again in 2001 whenever Miamin played someone halfway decent, they won usually by a big margin. Larry Coker won a title in his first year as a Head Coach, but it went downhill soon thereafter for him.

This team had an impressive resume but in based on talent they should be a runaway # 1 on this list. Alas, they are not because of their frequent listless uninspiring performances which would be harbingers of things to come in the Coker era in Coral Gables.

Ranking this team anywhere below # 1 is a complete disgrace. I'm sure the two FSU teams you ranks ahead of this team would have been smoked by the sight of Shockey, Portis, Reed and Andre Johnson!

You are a Nole loving tool who operates this website just to promote FSU. F U!

You are so damn smug!

The 1991 Canes ranked as the #12 team all time in any sport college or professional by ESPN and you claim they aren't even one of the ten best in the state's history?

Boy, I hope the FSU crowd appreaciates how much rewriting of history you are doing on this website.

No WAYYY oregon would have beaten Miami. Harrington versus Dorsey plus an NLF team??

All them oregon fans still would have loved a shot at the best college team to have ever been assembled...

then again. who wouldn't have honored the shot??
