The Miami Herald is reporting that Mario Cristobal, the best recruiter on the UM staff (and the person responsible for much of Rutgers successful recruiting in South Florida before rejoining the UM staff a few years ago) will be named Head Coach at FIU. This is considered another major blow to the Miami program coming just months after Pete Garcia, the Associate AD and renowed recruiter himself defected across town to F.I.U. to become the A.D. for the Golden Panthers. However, without Cristobal on the staff, Randy Shannon has the tools and the savvy to secure a good recruiting class, and this may make Shannon's job easier of luring a big name offensive coordinator to Coral Gables, someone who will not be forced to retain an offensive line coach simply for the sake of recruiting. My sense is that Miami fans are over reacting to this news and not putting Cristobal as a coach and a recruiter in the proper perspective.
