SOS: Southern Cal vs Florida

A few days ago I was criticzed heavily by many on this site for claiming Southern Cal played a stronger schedule than Florida and for the audacity I had to point out that Florida has not played an out of conference game outside Florida since 1991, which I have confirmed is the longest active streak in the nation of a school not leaving its home state to play a non conference game.

Well the facts are in from the four computers that rank strength of schedule :

Sagarin- USC(3), Florida(27)
Anderson-Hester- USC(9), Florida(16)
Colley-Matrix- USC(4), Florida(24)
Massey- USC(1), Florida(16)

USC's average computer ranking of 4.25 is much higher than the Gators average ranking of 19.50, even though three of the computers rank the SEC as a stronger league than the PAC 10? Why is Florida's schedule ranked so low compared to Southern California?

Each team has three "non fixed" games on their schedule. The PAC 10 plays none league games and the SEC playes eight, plus Florida is mandated to play Florida State by law. Thus three games can be scheduled at the disposal of the schools. The three games Florida scheduled were against Western Carolina, Southern Miss, and Central Florida. All three were in Gainesville. The three games for Southern Cal were @ Arkansas, vs Nebraska and vs Notre Dame.

Going back in the BCS Archive, Florida would have the lowest SOS of any BCS title game participant since at least 2001.

2001: Miami (6.25) vs Nebraska (1.75)
2002: Miami (2.50) vs Ohio State (13.75)
2003: Oklahoma (1.75) vs LSU (5.50)
2004: Southern Cal (6.50) vs Oklahoma (2.75)
2005: Southern Cal (7.75) vs Texas (1.25)

In fact only Ohio State in 2002 had a SOS lower 10th according to the BCS computers. Again if UF wants the benefit of the doubt when "style points" are lacking they must schedule tougher.
