Southern Cal is currently ranked ahead of Florida in the BCS poll despite being behind Florida in both human polls that are legitimate. (The BCS sponsored Harris Interactive poll is nothing but a sham: a contrived poll to attempt to legitimize a flawed BCS process.) When the BCS tweaked its formula after the 2000 season, these sort of problems were supposed to be avoided. That year Miami was ranked #2 in both polls, but was jumped in the computers by #3 Florida State who had lost to Miami during the Regular Season but got to play for the title. (As usual, FSU did have a better team than Miami that year but had been unlucky to lose to them when they played.) Then in 2003, Southern Cal ranked #1 in both human polls did not play for the BCS title. The formula was then further tweaked to put only a .333 emphasis in the overall formula on computers.
What has to happen for Florida to make the title game:
- Southern Cal must lose to California or UCLA.
- Southern Cal must beat Notre Dame
It goes without saying Florida must win out. Given the Gators shaky offense nothing is a given, but with playmakers like Jarvis Moss and Earl Everett playing defense and special teams the Gators have to like their chances. This year's Gator team is very much like some of the older Miami teams. The Hurricanes offenses were never outstanding. Last year I took lots of heat from some fans of Miami when I said that Florida and Florida State have had better offenses than Miami each of the past 25 years. I still believe that to be true. I have often commented that if Michael Irvin had gone to Florida State he would not have been "the playmaker," but he would have been just another playmaker. Heck, Hassan Jones, Jesse Hester and Bruce LaSane may have kept Irvin on the bench until he was a Junior or Senior.
My point is that Miami in its glory days, much like Florida today won with special teams and defense. Blocked kicks, timely interceptions, stripped balls at the right times, etc, etc. Something very special is brewing in Gainesville.

USC is 2nd in the Harris Poll, not 3rd. The AP is not part of the BCS.
Rewriting history. You seem to be on a one man mission to strip Miami of all its national titles and hand them to Florida State. Do you realize that between 1983 and 1993 Miami played for SEVEN national titles winning four while Florida State played for none. Yet you have now claimed in two different posts that Florida State was better than Miami during that period. What utter nonsense.
The Gators are going to whine but they have nobody but themselves to blame for their weak out of league schedule. Southern Cal, Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan will go out and schedule tough out of area games. Florida will not.
I agree with your points about FSU and Miami. We almost always had the better collection of talent, but despite their thug reputation Miami never seemed to get the stupid late hit calls, false starts and fumbles we always suffered versus them. That's why they won. I love BB, but I have to say he was usually outcoached by JJ or DE. These days however, Miami commits as many dumb fouls as we do and for that matter so does Florida.
Correction, UF is 3RD (not 2nd) in the AP & Coaches with USC 4th. USC is 3rd in the Harris poll with UF 4th. Harris & Coaches are used for the BCS calculations.
Nolefan1,
The funny thing is you are right about Florida commiting tons of dumb fouls. But on the flip side, how good must we be to be able to overcome them and have only 1 loss. You should go back and whoop it up with your good friends Jeff and Robert Bowden.
Enjoy the rest of your season.
God Bless
Two of the three leading recievers in the NFL are from Miami yet you claim FSU produces better recievers. What are yo high on, son?
I know I am a tad late on this...but the year Miami was ahead of FSU and FSU played Oklahoma for the BCS Title in the Orange Bowl and got spanked by Stoops let's not forget what Bobby Bowden said after the game -- "Clearly, Miami is the better team and should've been here."
Gee, I wonder, what gave that away?
