Street Ball and other thoughts

Last Night's loss by Florida State was unacceptable and embarrassing. Florida State has now made a habit of taking superior talent in Raleigh and other ACC destinations and handing games away. Jeff Bowden's offense which features more talent than most offensive units around the nation resorts to "street ball" or sandlot Football every time the going gets tough. The days when FSU out schemed opponents and showed more character then anyone north of Coral Gables is over.

Before the season, I picked Florida State to go undefeated and play for the National Title against Ohio State. I based this prediction on talent and recruiting. By making this prediction, I violated my own sacred covenant. That is that in professional sports talent wins titles but in the College game, coaching wins titles. Florida State's staff is among the worst around, and the team is constantly unprepepared. Even Miami who is hurting as badly as FSU these days can claim a major talent deficit with many of its opponents, and Larry Coker does go so far as to prepare a game plan for each opponent. While that may not seem like much it appears to be more than the FSU offensive staff does. FSU cannot claim a talent defecit with anyone because Florida State continues to have as much if not more talent then every team it plays. The results, even the close wins against inferior teams like Troy and yes, Miami were unacceptable.

Florida State has in my mind some of the most football savvy fans anywhere in America. I am a Gator and attend UM games but truthfully enjoy conversing with FSU fans a lot more than Miami and Florida fans because they have a higher appreciation it seems for the strategy and tactics of the game. FSU deserves better then a slow decline into football oblivion. Bobby Bowden himself deserves better than to be hated by all FSU fans under the age of 25. Something must give soon, either Bowden or the FSU fans.

Some thoughts on this weekend:

  • Matt Grothe is a special QB for USF and look for the Bulls to beat UConn this weekend. The Bulls need all the wins they can get because the Big East slate looks daunting after this week. USF 20 UConn 10
  • Florida will have little trouble beating "pudge" Russell and his LSU Tigers. Is it just me or is JeMarcus Russell really fat and out of shape? LSU cannot run the ball and they have had a severe drop off at WR. Look for Florida to eat up clock with the short passing game and to punish LSU on defense especially with Marcus Thomas returning. This game, contrary to what the ESPN hype machine says will not be close. Florida 34, LSU 9.
  • Everyone has written off John Bunting and North Carolina. I have not. Chuck Amato turned NC State around, and each of the past two years Bunting has had his team put on a furious late season rally to test bowl eligibility. Cam Sexton is an improvement over Joe Dailey at QB. This having been said, Miami will control the clock with Javarris James and Charlie Jones and should win this game by a decent score. Miami 24 UNC 13.
  • Oklahoma will beat Texas. No Vince Young= a return to the old Stoops/Brown series history. Oklahoma 20 Texas 16.

Although I have yet to meet an FSU fan that doesnt spout off nonsense when they learn I am a Gator, I appreciate your entry today Kartik.

I dont think Florida will rout LSU like you believe, but I do like our chances to win, especially playing at home in front of 90,000+.

The only think more helpful would be a rain shower.

I dont know why you are in lust with USF's QB, but you must find that deer in headlights stare he gives his coaching staff on the sideline's very attractive. He is and will only be a second fiddle to the rest of the state's backup QBs.

UNC will put up more than just a mild fight vs. Miami. Everyone likes to kick a team when they are down.

The days of scheming and tactics at FSU are long gone. Lorenzo Booker cant wait for the draft to arrive in April so he can get out of a system that doesnt appreciate his gifts.

Its HC in Gainesville and dont be surprised to see Meyer and Leak execute some "chocolate" plays tomorrow. The "vanilla" shit last weekend was boring!

Kartik, the play calling was fine last night. DW lacks that "it" factor. For all the complaining you do about Kyle Wright, at least he can do more than just lob the ball in the air hoping his recievers make a play. At least he has a cannon! We need Lee to play NOW.

I would be happy if the Gators win by any score - which I think they will do if they don't get down by 14 points in the first 20 minutes.

I, too, thought the offensive play calling was, for the most part, OK in the FSU-NCS game last night. The problem was that FSU's defense, after a heroic goaline stand, seemed to fold.

Go Gators!

jim rome, I see you are resulting to racism again by saying Leak will execute "chocolate" plays. Typical Gator fan racism. Jealously over superb athletics at the U.

Don't think anyone is jealous of Miami and their one point victories over Houston this year...

Perhaps cane fan is a complete moron.

Let me emphasize the non-racial difference between "Vanilla" play calling which is conservative and ordinary and "Chocolate" which is for lack of a better metaphor; the Emory and Henry play.

Vanilla = ho hum, nothing fancy short pass, short run

Chocolate = end-around, deep bomb, double handoff, flea flicker

But if you want to talk race we can do that too.... FLORIDA is well ahead in the RACE to a national title as compared to poop teams like Miami and FSU.

put that one in your pipe and smoke it you degenerate hanger on to past glories!

eat a dick and tell your mom i want my skateboard back!

When you have 5 titles you can talk! Until then shut up!

It is obvious based on the evidence that Miami and Florida State have never won ANYTHING. The mythical national championship is just that, mythical. No school that doesn't face the rigors of the week in and week out grind of the SEC could possibly be crowned champions in legit fashion. Florida, the only school to ever win a REAL championship from this state.
